Michael Matas is a classically trained pianist, starting his education at the piano at 9 years of age. He studied with numerous teachers over the years, with varying teaching styles. During this time, he performed in many recitals and music festivals. In high school, he started teaching piano, and took on as many as 50 students per week. He continued teaching throughout university, paying his tuition by teaching piano. While in university studying Mathematics, he took a year off to focus on his music, practicing several hours a day, and put together a piano teaching method book. He saw many flaws in other method books being used at the time and wanted a more efficient teaching book. Upon graduating university, he started his own music school, where he taught students in their homes. After several years of teaching privately and bringing students up to advanced levels, Michael decided to start a retail business and take a break from teaching. While operating his retail store that has a grand piano inside, he met many people who wanted to learn to play the piano, but did not have the time, nor wanted to spend the hundreds of dollars a month on traditional piano lessons.
